Separated shoulder from karate?

Ok, while practicing takedowns in the dojo I managed to end up with a 1st degree separation in my shoulder. The doc said it'll heal on its own about 6 weeks, but take it easy. In people's opinions how long til I start sparring and or my full contact Defensive Combinations? Has this ever happened to anyone else. Note: I'm in the studio 5 times a week, at least 2 hours each day and am also an assistant instructor.

You have to listen to your doctor on this. If you do not let it heal fully it will only re-injure.

You can still go in and work out. Just be smart about it. Do your stances, help with others. I would not do ANY hand techniques. Even on the un-injured side, the hicate (Cross chest tension) can aggravate the injury.
Reply:If it will heal in 6 weeks I'll start working out in 7 weeks.
Reply:Don't even think about anything that would stress your shoulder until it is completely healed. You might be out for a while, but if you wait until it is fully healed you will be in good shape. If you do not wait, you could prolong the healing process and damage it even more. I would recommend waiting the entire six weeks before doing anything that could potentially put stress on it.
Reply:After 6 weeks , see for urself and also see ur doctor and get a clearance from him....it will take longer to heal again if u re-injure it.....take it easy
Reply:Separations and disclocations suck... That needs to heal. I would recommend the following before going back to sparring. 1) Go to a chiropractor - hopefully your insurance covers it. Consider going to a Traditional Chinese Doctor if there is a good one in the area. They will give you something to take.

2) Consider suppliments to help heal

3) Talk to your doctor about rehab

4) Strengthen your muscles... I'm not saying bodybuilding, I'm saying physical therapy.

You do not want a relapse.

Best of luck to you, sorry you got hurt.
Reply:I agree with all the above. Give it the full six weeks then go back to the doctor and don't start working out again until the doctor gives you the OK. Then of course work yourself up slowly, don't stress yiour sholder again.
